Goaltending is Different. Training Should Be Too.

Goalies face a level of pressure few players experience. They’re the last line of defense, always in the spotlight, and often expected to perform without position-specific support.

Practicing with the team helps, but it’s not enough. Goalies need their own drills, a unique mindset, and a training path tailored to their role. Coach Utah fills that gap with focused, goalie-specific development that builds confidence, control, and leadership on the ice.

Meet Coach Utah

Landon Anderson is known by his students as Coach Utah—a name that reflects where he came from and represents a different philosophy to goaltending. After years of playing junior hockey and starting in goal for the University of Utah, Landon found his calling helping other goalies thrive. Lead coach for Shane Clifford’s Goalie School at the Baierl Ice Center in the Pittsburgh area, Coach Utah brings experience and heart to the ice.

With a degree in kinesiology and certifications in personal training, Landon teaches more than drills—he coaches mindset, movement, and mental toughness. Parents trust him. Kids look up to him. And every goalie he works with knows they’re getting someone who gets it.

What Students Say

The improvement [my son] has shown over the past year speaks for itself. Landon keeps him engaged and knows how to get through to him so he understands.

I like how every week Landon asks what I think [my goalie] needs work on. I don’t always have an answer but it’s nice to have input.

Thoughtful, experienced, and always positive. Coach Utah has the ability to make learning fun without ever compromising on fundamentals.

Coach Landon is absolutely fantastic. Great coach and wonderful with my son. Couldn’t be happier!

          Team Practice Isn’t Enough

Most youth hockey teams work hard to run structured, well-rounded practices. Even with great coaching, it’s easy for goalie development to get overlooked. Goalies often run the same drills as the rest of the team, when what they really need is something different.

Goalies move differently. They see the game differently. Their skills are built through unique reps, angles, and habits that team drills just don’t cover. Coaches put in a tremendous amount of work. But especially for those without a goaltending background, it can be tough to provide focused goalie development.

When that gap goes unfilled, goalies can feel stuck. Worse, they start to feel like they’re not good enough. That’s not a motivation problem. It’s a training problem. And it’s one Coach Utah is here to solve.

          High Expectations. Not Enough Support.

Wins are a team effort—but when the puck goes in, it’s often the goalie who takes the blame. One goal can change a game, and every goaltender mistake feels like it’s on full display.

At the same time, many goalies aren’t given the drills, feedback, or focused development they need to perform with confidence. That kind of pressure adds up. Over time, it can lead to frustration, self-doubt, or even burnout.

You can change that story. Through training built for the goalie position and with coaching that builds belief, you can step into your role with calm, control, and confidence.

          Teams that Talk Goalie

Great coaches are always looking for ways to help their players grow. When it comes to goalies, sometimes a small shift in communication can make a big impact.

Feedback like “Make the save” or “Be ready next time” may be well-intended, but it can leave goalies unsure of what to improve or how to contribute. The same holds true for backup goalies who spend time on the bench with no explanation. Lack of communication can lead to frustration, discouragement, and team energy can take a hit.

Coach Utah helps coaches take a different perspective on how goaltenders think, train, and thrive. By being better equipped, coaches can use their goaltenders more strategically, That means communicating clearly about game plans, setting expectations, and helping the entire team understand how to support the goalie—not treat them like a last line of defense working alone.

Better communication leads to better confidence. And when goalies feel like part of the plan, the whole team plays stronger.
